Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) in Canada: Your Path to Gaining Work Experience
Canada offers international students a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable work experience after graduation through the Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) program. If you have completed your studies at an eligible Canadian institution, this permit allows you to work in Canada and even set the foundation for permanent residency.
What is the Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)?
The PGWP is an open work permit that enables international graduates to work for any employer in Canada without the need for a job offer at the time of application. This permit is a great way to gain Canadian work experience, which can be beneficial when applying for permanent residency through programs like Express Entry.
Eligibility Requirements for the PGWP
To be eligible for a Post-Graduate Work Permit, you must:
- Have completed a full-time program at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada that lasted at least 8 months.
- Have maintained full-time student status throughout your program (with exceptions for leave authorized by the institution).
- Have graduated from a program that leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate.
- Apply for the PGWP within 180 days of receiving your final marks or graduation confirmation.
- Hold a valid study permit at the time of application or have held one within the 180-day application period.
How Long is the PGWP Valid For?
The duration of the PGWP depends on the length of your study program:
- If your program was between 8 months and 2 years, your PGWP will be valid for the same length as your program.
- If your program was 2 years or more, you may receive a work permit valid for up to 3 years.
- If you completed multiple eligible programs, you may be able to combine their durations to receive a longer PGWP.
Who is NOT Eligible for the PGWP?
You may not qualify for a PGWP if:
- You studied a program that was shorter than 8 months.
- Your studies were primarily done through distance learning.
- You received funding through the Government of Canada scholarships that require you to return to your home country.
- You have already been issued a PGWP before (this permit is a one-time opportunity).
